Reflection: 'serious thought or consideration'
Let's begin...
Reflecting upon myself already, I've learnt that there's more than what meets the eye. I took note during my lecture with Katy White, representing her work: 'After the Race'. She had created a series of images on retired greyhound racing dogs and printed them onto wet plates. Wet plate was introduced back in 1851 and was an early photographic technique introduced by Frederick Scott Archer. This technique was applied by adding a soluble iodide to cellulose nitrate, mixed, and coated onto a glass plate. The technique had a massive impact on each of the individual images, sending a powerful message throughout.
Besides the technique used, I was most inspired by her depth of research. Looking back at my previous photography work, grabbing information that linked in with my own work, I had made very little effort. Whereas Katy researched a lot more than what meets the eye. Research included the background of the greyhounds, how they were treated, what happened to them when they 'retired', background inspiration when photographing the dogs, and more.
Overall, Katy's body of work explores the anthropocentric gaze and animal as 'other'.
