Call The Cavalry
Learning Outcome: reinforce understanding of the basic controls of a 35mm DSLR camera. Increase understanding of shallow and extended depth of field.
The instructions were to set our cameras to daylight white balance, Jpeg files and manual focus.
We were required to make three portraits... These were the tasks asked.
- An environmental portrait. The individual depicted is photographed in a location where they live, work, rest or play.
- An isolation portrait. The subject is isolated from the background by use of wide aperture, achieving a blurred background effect so that attention is concentrated on the person depicted. The background conveys limited information about the subject.
Environmental Portrait
I was slightly disappointed with this portrait as the right side of the image is blurred. I did not realise this when shooting until loading it up onto computer. I'm still pleased with the image itself as I believe it tells a lot about Charlotte. To begin with, in her right hand she is holding a camera. When grouped with her, she came across very keen on the subject and seemed passionate when shooting. Centre frame, herself and what she's wearing: stylish clothing. Behind her are locked up bikes. To relate to fashion she stands beside a stylish bike, (the green one with a basket). Even though she said she enjoys boat rides, and being adventurous.. I felt that bikes could link in with the whole idea of 'being adventurous'.
I dislike the reflecting light in the top left corner. I feel it draws your attention away from the main concept of the image which is not what I intended.
If I was to reshoot this image, I would straighten up my composition, maybe use a tripod to compensate. Also double check that the image is not blurred as I feel the image is not as strong enough as it could be.
I would also consider changing the background as she said originally boats. Perhaps a location change could be at a harbour where plenty of boats board.
Of the images taken, I was thoroughly pleased with the outcome due to the limited time that we had. I had also forgotten my camera and needed time to work out how to use a cannon whereas I work with a Nikon. Using a Cannon in comparison to my Nikon instantly made me want to swap!
Isolation Portrait
To the left I present to you my original image. I liked the image in both black & white and colour as both have such an effect overall. I found the colour image interesting as the blurred background and the colour of it really brought out the image in front, (shallow depth of field). As for the black & white image I found that it created deep meaning and emotion, presenting more of an emotional image rather than a portrait. I like the depth of shadow casted across the right side of her face. I do not know the girl personally therefore this portrait is not one of knowledge, BUT the Jo came across shy therefore I felt the shadow gave off this representation as it hides half the features on her face. I'd classify shy has hiding away and I believe this fits the connotation well. As a final image, I choose to use my edited version in black & white.
