Lecture with Hayley Louisa Brown

Studied at the London College of Fashion, Fashion & portrait photographer Hayley, who is also the founder and Creative Director of BRICK magazine. BRICK was first established/ issued in April this year. BRICK is a magazine Hayley created which suited the audience of not only men but woman also. She felt from all music magazines she had read that none interested her as a female, therefore she created her own for females who have interest in music. As well as working for this magazine, she has also had practise & experience with other music and fashion magazines such as CLASH and Wonderland. She commented on how difficult it can be working for magazines because it is a tough and competitive business.
She has also created commercial work for clients including Adidas, Universal Music, Maxi & Juju. At one point she also completed commercial work for ASOS but felt it brought her down because she was photographing pretty, stereotypical models and all she would be shooting is females where she fancied a change of scenery. Hayley said she felt she couldn't provide her own photographic ability because she had to do as the client asked and none of it felt her own work.

At the moment, Hayley is concentrating on portraiture, specifically males. This is because she prefers shooting men because she has a better connection and from past experience of photographing woman she is liking the change. She also likes to shoot people she has never met, as her confidence has grown and it's much easier for her to approach people.

Hayley's said that the way of approaching photography in the last year has dramatically altered. She likes to shoot with film and mostly on medium format. The outcome of the photo and its quality is something she quite likes about the format.

Sharing from experience, Hayley advised us that the images we take MUST come from our own interests. Hayley likes skate boarding and music which is a common element in her images and not always seen as an obvious subject but is clear when you notice stereotypical pieces, such as tattoos, gold teeth, etc. Hayley realised what she wanted to do at the age of 19-20, which was to shoot musicians which brought her to the magazine BRICK.

Hayley is publishing a book, September 2016 called 'You Should Pay Rent In My Mind' featuring images which she has never shown to public, some of her favourite images and more.
