Show and Tell for Narrative Brief: Formative Assessment

Today I presented the four images which I'd been working on before christmas which were influenced for style by photographer Duane Michals. I spoke about how I wanted my viewers to feel unattached because the woman in frame had this representation of emptiness through the use of a glass and other props/ environment surrounding. Therefore the feeling of emptiness was to be carried through both person photographed and viewer which I believe I achieved through a number of ways. Firstly I showed no connection with the models face, only from the side or behind. This looked very discreet which I liked very much, so that the person in frame seemed unaware of my presence. Also the dull overall colour of brown symbolised masculine qualities such as courage and independence. I wanted to show the viewer that even though the message that I'm getting across is of an old lady who has lost friends and family as she ages she is not vulnerable. I believe it is noticeable that she is not struggling through props within the image such as being homed, showing a sign of wealth, dressed casually with no drags, etc.
When photographing I asked the model to go about her ways as normal and not pose anything in particular. I liked the capture of her routine by having a drink and attending to the dog because it seemed less set up which is what I wanted most out of this shoot as I've found within previous shoots when attempting this situation, it always manages to look set up.
The drinking glass was a big part of this narrative because it was the main representation of emptiness. The glass is present in every image, signifying emptiness. The first image, the glass is half empty, connoting that she has half the company of friends and family she began with. As she drinks, the glass at the end becomes empty. The empty glass represents that she has no one left besides herself and the dog. I'd planned for the glass to approach its way into the image slowly and not so obvious. I believe I achieved this and was very pleased with the outcome.

I have recently over christmas changed my idea and made development within my visual logbook. I still wanted to document my original idea because I felt it still had some relevance to my developed new idea and I was very pleased with its outcome.

Here are the images that I presented for my show and tell.
