Week 22: The Bletchley Park Sessions, codes in lighting - Alan Turing, The Dark Side

For this workshop, we needed to use flash to create four images that conveyed darkness or evil. It was quite interesting once we had taken note on Arnold Newman's image of Alfried Krupp as the shadow ran down the middle of his face, which we liked as a group.

Our first image needed to be of a lit background, which we used a black colorama back drop and lit it so that the object was not surrounded by a jet black.

Next, using the same subject, an image with a dark background. We kept to the same black colorama  back drop but took away the lighting. This was our outcome...

The third task we managed to get up to out of the four was an image with a dramatic background. We completed this using a red gel on one of the lights which lit the background, creating a red glow behind the subject which I quite liked.

Overall we found it fairly difficult to create a sinister look on our subject. Perhaps with a better choice of clothing we could have implied the idea of something bad/evil better. The quality of light was good, lighting either one side of her face representing this idea of 'The Dark Side', although personally a shed of light on the darkest side of the image could have made the image look more professional and planned out, because it is very simple to draw a black cast over one side of the model.
