My intention on the approach of still life

  • What does ‘Still Life’ mean to me?
I always picture a fruit bowl with a range of colourful fruits, or a bunch of flowers placed within a vase, therefore it is an arrangement of objects. It also considers the element of texture. Flowers in a glass vase show a contrast in texture because a vase is normally a smooth, glass texture, whereas flowers can be seen as rough.
  • How am I approaching still life? Why have I chosen this approach?
At this point I’m thinking a collection of items that represent Autumn, i.e. fallen leaves, conkers, cinnamon sticks and pumpkins. The objects used are all very contrasting from smooth textures to more rough, cutting textures. I feel this will represent a good still life and something less traditional from the typical objects that are usually spotted within a still life image such as fruit and flowers.
I feel this approach will work with the context I’m working on because of the use of colour involved, props and locations which will create that pleasing look within my images.
  • Why have I chosen this subject?
Even though the objects I have chosen to represent my subject of Autumn seem fairly obvious for those viewing the image, I want my images to present themselves as contextualised as I’m trying to get across the better things that come with the colder weather. I want to create images that could be seen on adverts for perhaps food stores, fashion outlets, and other advertisements.
I prefer the Autumn season, due to its colour, change of fashion and cosy nights in. I am not making this project personal to myself though. This is why I intend on creating contextualised images using the subjects that I have chosen because when viewing fashion, food and events advertisement they’re usually quite pleasing to watch.
