Workshop: Week 1: Lighting Workshop: Balancing Ambient & Flash
- Using a light meter in ambient mode, set desired ISO and shutter speed and take a meter reading
- Set camera to this reading
- Set the flash unit to a middle range setting as a starting point and take a meter reading in flash mode
- Adjust flash/strobe head output until it matches ambient light meter reading (which should have been set on the camera). You should now have a 1:1 lighting balance between flash and ambient
- Play with shutter speed and aperture to see what affect this has on the ambient and flash expsoures
- Adjust the power of the flash lights and see what affect this has on the ratio between flash and ambient
Today's workshop involved following the instructions above to help us create a balanced ambient and flash when photographing using a range kit. I found it most helpful going back over the previous sessions we'd completed from year 1, refreshing our minds.
