Self Initiated: collaborating with my family
I was influenced by a local artist who had been creating work from her daughters drawings. She mentioned collaboration and I had a light bulb moment... I'd never considered to collaborate with anyone apart from those in other practises such as graphic design, film, etc.
I came up with the idea of working with my family to create a memorial piece for my Mother who died back in 2008. I realised I'd never put together any work about her. I emailed James Cant to find out whether or not it was a way of collaboration, to which it was!
Straight away I left close family of mine and my Mother's to write a personal message to her. It could be anything they'd like however I briefed them by giving them options, such as a letter or a memory they wish to reminisce.
So far my family have been very brave and came up with some lovely messages. I found my Father's rather special as he is not one for soppiness.
I thought collaborating with my family on a personal subject could possibly provide closure. Since we lost her we've never done anything like this therefore I thought it was a nice exercise for us all to do.
