Careers and Employability Meeting - The Ideas Factory
This session was really helpful; it definitely made me feel a lot more confident about my future. Even though it was short and brief it was good to meet the team and see what they can offer us.
As a starter Sebastian said to find where our work can fit into commercial practise. This could open some opportunities for us. Also it would be good to look into business' with similar themes and interests to my own work.
There's a section on the intranet which shows upcoming workshops that Sebastian is putting on to help us which already there is a couple that I'm interested in and think will be of great help - setting up a CV is one. I have no up-to-date CV therefore now would be a good time to start getting that sorted.
It was quite relieving to hear that even if we weren't interested in continuing with our course in the future that they are also there to support us with other options. I would like to think I'd carry on with photography and use my years of education in a career however I do have times where I'm struggling to see myself working in a creative position. It would seem a real shame for me to end up in a job that uses nothing that I have worked hard for.
I need to continue getting work experience like working as an assistant for photographers and looking beyond that. Perhaps that will get me motivated and wanting to be in the creative industry more. At the moment I feel as if I don't know much about what else is out there. I originally wanted to go into freelance but now as I'm learning more about the other jobs involved I'm not so sure whether that's what I want anymore. I also couldn't see myself working well as a freelancer because I struggle with independence. It's something that I should develop and have already during my time at university but relying on myself constantly and keeping a business going I can imagine will be pretty tough.
