Group Crit with James C
Within my group crits I have realised how motivated I am this year in comparison to the previous two years of university. At this point I've managed to get roughly 6 shoots done, making sure I'm up-to-date with both the reflective journal and visual logbook... whereas before I'd probably only got one shoot done not giving anything much thought. I think now that I've found my area of interest and knowing that I have under a year left it's got me focused. I'm really pleased with my efforts so far and hope it continues throughout the rest of the year.
Everyone within the group pretty much knows what each individual is doing for their project. I quite like the mix of students work between our group. Each idea is completely different and most of the group participates and gives advice.
When presenting my work some of the students said how it's obvious that I'm showing a personal connection with the images from the composition of the shots (getting close with the subject) and photographing older photos to show other relationships involved and history. One of the students cried which was a great feeling knowing my work had that effect on someone. I want that emotion to show through the images as I present this idea of grief and coping with it through these images. I've never been able to do that within my work.
They liked how I'd been capturing her from an angle that perhaps you wouldn't normally see someone. They said how it represented our relationship and closeness. One student mentioned about getting even closer and capturing how teeth as in some of the photos you can see she hasn't got many teeth. This could present another capture of closeness.
I noticed from looking at others work that within my visual logbook I haven't presented a lot of comparison with other photographers/ artists work. I also need to write more on the reflection of my work and be more critical.
For the next session James advised us all to bring in prints so that it was easier for everyone in the class to get involved and view the images from a hard copy. I suppose when we load them up on the screen you're scrolling through and there's not enough time to go through every one of them so prints would be better.
