Seminar with Ross: Findings and Devils Advocate

We began the session by discussing what resources we use when we are researching. Throughout my first and second year and probably before that I always would us Pinterest. I used to think it had enough for what I was looking for. It would be my inspiration for briefs and a starting point at times. However as I started third year I realised I don't research hard enough. I go for the easiest option and that it what's in front of me. Now I have been taking books out of the library (probably more in this term than I have my whole time in education), digging through google and the AOP website. I have found so much more than what I normally would. I've discovered interviews with the photographers that I've researched giving me insight on their projects and helping me find ways to develop their concept within my own practise. Already I have looked into many photographers work which some I had never even heard of before that I have created work relative to my own which has been a great help during my shoots. Now, I only use Pinterest for quotes that I like to post on Instagram, very rarely for my research. With Pinterest I've realised that it's pretty much like Wikipedia... people can upload things about their own work or other artists work but the facts aren't always true. When I would look for photographers images some of the images weren't anything to do with them. It must take words from what I've searched and give me everything that includes some of the phrases.

The session consisted of debating which would help us argue from both sides of our question within our research report. Even though I didn't have much to contribute to the debate I still found it very interesting and was taking in everything. Some of the questions were fairly hard and especially if I was on the side that is for the argument whereas in reality I am totally against it. I couldn't think of anything! It's definitely encouraged me to argue from both points of my question... especially as I'm looking into how photography can be used as therapy and capturing images with emotion; could be there boundaries to how far I can photograph a certain topic that presents grief.

Again these sessions are becoming very helpful and I'm not so worried about writing up the research report now as I did when I first started 3rd year. However I have yet to start it!
