Mid Unit Review

The mid unit review is always really helpful and I benefit from it greatly. I also enjoy looking through others work and seeing what they're getting up to as everyones ideas across the course are so different! As I've mentioned quite a bit when reflecting on my work I believe I am doing better this year than I have during my last two years. I feel motivated and I'm finally enjoying the work that I'm creating.

From the results of the mid unit review I was very pleased with the feedback. Overall the group marked my work with 70%: room for improvement but engaging. Bellow at the strengths and areas for improvement they gave me.

LO1: Demonstrate rigorous use of recognised methods to test and analyse concepts, materials and processes appropriate to your area of study.
Strengths: Good range of experimentation of different cameras and lighting. Moving image work is explored. Good at analysing concepts, taking others advice on board, and self-reflecting/evaluating.
Areas for Improvement: Try and push the film aesthetic more/experiment with filters to recreate lens flares and light leaks in digital. Evidence your experimentation with exposures a bit more. Show your exposure settings, i.e. ISO, shutter speed etc.

LO2: Show ability to construct and develop arguments using knowledge and methods pertinent to current research and practice in your subject.
Strengths: Wide range of relevant photography research. Good, clear response to the methods used by the photographers.
Areas for Improvement: Look at a wider range of research, i.e. paintings TV, theories. Look at more photo books. Look at where your work could be published. Look into more editorial styled work. Research independent magazines.

LO3: Show evidence of utilising a range of independency gathered scholarly information including primary material and academic or industry-based research.
Strengths: We loved your Ibiza photos - shows a range of subject and we liked how it was a point of view of your life, not your grandmas. Great analysis of Sally Mann ethics.
Areas for Improvement: Maybe looking at theory behind loss and grief could push your work further. Try broaden your subject, do your grandma and other aspects of everyday life.

LO4: Develop questions and make informed judgements that allow potential solutions to problems to be identified.
Strengths: Continuously identified areas for improvement, development, and experimenting. You are good at being self-critical and solving problems.
Areas for Improvement: Take more risks with your work and subject matter. Maybe write a little bit more about your subject matter and grandma.

LO5: Communicate creatively and appropriately to a variety of audiences using text and images.
Strengths: Communication of thoughts and ideas is strong. VL & RJ are very clear, organised and interesting. Perseverance when feeling unmotivated and tries again when she feels her work is unsuccessful.
Areas for Improvement: Add pre-shoot preps and ideas more consistently. Show evidence of editing/post-production process.

LO6: Demonstrate a clear approach to planning and developing a career in the creative industries.
Strengths: Skills audit is clear and useful. Pro-active with job search and market research. The softer 50mm portrait, soft, close-up images were much more visually engaging than the landscape orientated shots.
Areas for Improvement: A clear time-plan for project would be effective. Research more into cameras/lenses you could use such as 85mm 1.2 canon lens.

I definitely agree with a lot of the areas for improvement. I know that I need to experiment more with different types of lens' because at the minute I'm just using the two that I have available to me. I also didn't realise that I hadn't been showing planning of my shoots and there will get those in. The strengths were also really good to see, especially as they were commenting on the images I was making as well as the written stuff.
