Seminar: Conclusion and Abstract

What is an abstract? It is a brief summary of a particular subject and is often used to help the reader quickly find the paper's purpose. Very similar to a blurb.

Using our 10 point plan we can include this within our introduction and conclusion. We need to remember that our introduction needs to explain what will be within the essay and the conclusion will summarise the essay. It is not a repeat of the introduction.

Ross mentioned to use the VLE to look up previous research reports as a guide/starting point. Don't just look at photography though!!!

During the session we were given a sheet which had a conclusion completed by a previous student. Using that we had to identify what the title of the essay could be and find the strengths and weaknesses.
We identified the question as: Has CGI replaced photographers in the automative advertising industry?

In our group we thought the weaknesses were:
  • The past & present tense was not consistent. For an industry report it needs to be written in the third person.
  • It came across informal
  • It was not very academic. They had started off with 'CGI' and only after did they write it out in full. They should have started out writing what CGI stood for in full and then continued to shorten it.
  • The strengths and weaknesses of the subject was not equal
  • Overall it doesn't conclude the question asked
Strengths:
  • Readable - I was able to understand each sentence and word.
  • Discussing the future for CGI and photographers in the automotive industry
  • Spellings and grammar
The question for the essay can be open and as simple as a couple of words. It doesn't necessarily have to be a question as long as it specifies what the essay subject is.
In the essay you are supposed to talk in the 3rd person however in a reflective report you should talk in the first person.
If using quotations it needs to be no more than 20% of the essay word count.
