Best Use of Instagram Workshop with Kerry Curl

I attended the 9.30am session and was the only one who attended, therefore it was great that I was able to have a 1:1 with her. I know of her work and follow her Instagram, however had never spoken to her about my practice because I felt her work is completely different to my own. From speaking to her I managed to gain some new photographers work to look through such as Tim Motram and Francis Bacon.

So obviously the workshop was about Instagram so Kerry was giving me some interesting facts which I didn't know. She spoke about the algorithms and the benefit of the world wide being able to see your work current to their time and day in comparison to the time of day you had posted. I didn't like the algorithms before, however finding out that it can actually spread my work across a wider audience is great!
Also it's been found that the best time to post an image is 5pm. I never really think about the time I just post when I want to. I am aware that the later or earlier I post it the less likely it's going to be seen, however with the new algorithms this could take that issue away. I do notice a difference in likes, especially on my personal account when posting at different times. Like Kerry said though it's not necessarily down to whether or not people like my image it's more the fact that they haven't seen it.

Kerry asked numerous questions about whether I follow any particular photographers on Instagram, magazines, exhibitions etc which I had already been following Photograd, AOP and a few wedding photographers. I never thought to use Instagram as a source for finding work that I liked because obviously now a lot of people present their work on this platform as well as a website. She advised me to follow the Truman Brewery and Free Range.

Even though many use Instagram now to access someone's practice Kerry said it was still important that I kept my website up-to-date and made sure it was presentable. I have a website, not paid for, and I done it for the hand in for year 2 therefore it really needs updating. I will sort this ready in time for exhibitions for sure.
