Group Crit
During group crits I like to listen to the feedback each individual gets and see if it has any relation to my work. Photographers and other artists are always useful if I like their work but haven't heard of them before. I wrote down Todd Hido, Richard Leoroyd, Julia Hetter and Vincent Gouriou. There interests me in their use of colour and tone.
I noticed that many had put their feedback from the professional panel crit into their visual logbook. I am aware that it doesn't matter where we place it. But it was how the individuals marked where it worked and where they need to improve from what the professionals said. I thought this was a good idea to show that the work is developing from the comments. I will consider doing this.
Kate gave me some texts to look at that have relevance to my concept. Family Frames by Miriam Hirsch and Roland Barthes Camera Lucida.
Apart from texts I was also given some artists names and their works. Celine Marchbank Tulips. Images that she had taken before and after her mothers death. Spencer Merphy and Alec Soth. Joe Spence, Beyond the Family Album. The context of the work will feed into my own.
When making personal work, I need to remember that the audience won't know, without context, that the work has a deep meaning. I need to be aware of this when taking my photographs and look at them objectively. Do I feel what the photograph is trying to get across?
A student mentioned about me applying my style of work into another subject. Perhaps continuing with this theme of grief and applying it to other individuals who have experienced a similar situation.
