Personal Statement
I attended the seminar with Ross on What is a concept?. This helped me to construct a personal statement as it made me think about my work. This was my original artist statement...
Documenting my family and I as we deal with the loss of my mother. What do we remember her by and trying to keep her memories alive in photos without her presence. Based around the concept of love, loss and memory.
Later on in the unit I spoke to James S about my CV and what I should be writing in my professional profile. He said that my professional profile should be written like an personal statement which can also be included on my website's About page. I wanted the personal statement for my website to elaborate more on my past which James advised me to. I was worried I would talk too much about my past rather than the work I am making. Below is what I have put together and feel there is the right amount about my past as well as what work I am making...

My dear mum passed away in 2008. I wanted to continue to make her proud, and so I did. I kept my head down at school and college and now I'm soon to graduate from university. University helped me to find who I am as a photographer. Through the process of losing my mum I found myself producing images around the idea of loss and how my family and I have coped with grief.
The last year or more I have been focusing on creating work that displays grief but also a celebration of her life. I didn't want the work to reflect death but instead this sense of moving on but never forgetting. Through portraiture, still life and landscapes I plan on continuing the work after university within my own personal practice. The image making has provided me with comfort. Photographs are therapeutic and can help those who are suffering. From my own experience they have certainly helped me, both making them and the existing ones that I have of my mum. I believe that without the many images of my mum I would probably struggle a lot as I was very young when she passed.
I started by talking about the loss of my mum and the drive it gave me to make work about her. I then talk about my practice and the type of work I've been making and continue to make. I've also brought a personal side to it by mentioning the comfort the work has provided me with and isn't just for the completion of this unit.
