Portfolio Planning: arrangement of images

I spoke with James S and Ross on Thursday discussing plans for my portfolio. I've been pushing it aside because I wasn't feeling confident about my current work, leaving me with around 18 images I would happily put into my portfolio. By going and speaking with them it really helped me feel less worried and more confident about placing in more images than I planned.
Both James and Ross went through my current project to see if any of the images had potential. James picked out a couple and advised me to work on some areas for them to work with my other images. Ross went through my images for BA3a and said he liked the work. But I should consider the size of the images when printing as it is such a personal project would it have the same effect if they were printed big?

Before seeing anyones finished portfolios or speaking to the tutors I had just planned to print them as they are, either portrait or landscape at A3 with a small white boarder. However now I am thinking much different. I think it will be best to print to the format of my box which is portrait. Having the landscape images portrait too with larger boarders. By doing that it makes it easier for the viewer to go through the photos without having to change the orientation of the box. I will be printing on A3 but making the image much smaller on the page, between A4 and A5. I need to print examples of potential work at both orientations and whether or not 1 or 2 images per page so I can begin printing!

I spent Friday going through all my images for BA3b and picking out the ones which had the most potential to go into my portfolio. It turned out that I actually had many images to pick from which I was very pleased about. Before doing this I was only confident with around 14 images which was not enough for me. I felt like I needed more to pull the narrative together. My time management for planning my portfolio has been poor. I should have come and spoken to friends and tutors sooner if I was feeling worried. I tend to leave things until the last minute and avoid them if I'm worrying which I need to learn is the worst thing to do! However I'm glad I managed to speak to someone Friday. It helped a lot and gave me the weekend to plan and hopefully start to proof and print by Monday.

After going through BA2b, BA3a and BA3b I have now got 36 images that could potentially go into my portfolio. This is great! With that I printed them all on colour and A4 size to start working with what goes and what doesn't. I printed in both orientations just in case but knew that I was definitely going for portrait. During this I took a look at the ones I liked and disliked and worked from there. Then I brought them all in Monday for friends and tutors to take a look and give me their opinion. Some of the images I disliked others liked and vice versa. Overall I was really pleased with the final selection, with enough from each project to tie it all in. After asking Ross for his opinion he said he liked the selection. There was a couple he said he probably wouldn't include but it was up to me as they worked just as well with them. However the ones that he said I could work without were the ones that I wasn't too sure on in the first place so I removed them. However he said I could print them and see what they will look like which I may do.

Besides 3 of the images this is my plan for my portfolio. I have a reasonable amount from each project apart from the diptychs from BA2b. I only had 4 images from that project anyway and the other 2 didn't fit in. Ross said that he preferred it with just the 2 anyway so that was a bonus. I have yet to decide on the sequencing but as it is a box that's something that will be re-arranged anyway but there are certain images that will work better next to each other in the sequence rather than apart. Originally I planned on separating them as projects but now that I have a good half mix from each I may well place them in as 1 and mix them around because they are all based on the same subject.

Out of the 36 images the images below were the no's and the maybe's. There was a couple that I was disappointed about however when placing them within the selection could see that they weren't going to work.

A few mentioned that the image of my nan looking out the window was fairly blue in comparison to my warmer images. I've taken it into Photoshop and compared it against another one of the images from that series and adjusted it.

Next is soft proofing and working out what size boarder I want to use for my images.
